The Dream Job: Working for Yourself

While many of us seem to make similar statements, entrepreneurs took the next step to make this dream of theirs a reality. Everyone loves their own respective hobby – so why not do it full time if you can fully understand some of the keys to entrepreneurship, how to build a sustainable business and how to keep it a success? Instead of dreaming for the perfect job in being your own boss and working the perfect job in the hobby industry of your choice, make it a reality. Everyone wants the perfect job.

In the midst of this current economic recession, those who are struggling to get through every day in a job that they hate, the pressure is only mounting with the difficulties most are having with finding a new job. Many of us enjoy working.

Try to figure out what you hate about employment with others. By assessing your job in a logical fashion, you need to ask yourself a series of questions. Even though you feel an extreme amount of pressure from working for a job that you hate, it is important to consciously evaluate what you hate about your job, boss or company. By doing this, you will give yourself the opportunity to look back at what you hated when you are getting ready to turn your hobby into a business. When you evaluate what you hate about being employed by someone else, you need to do it in a systematic and logical fashion.

You need to write a business plan. You should also keep in mind that whatever aspects you compile for creating your business, these will all be things that may need to be “edited” in the future as nothing is “set in stone”. Now that you have compiled all of the things you hated or loved about your old job, you should be able to incorporate these important traits into the business you will soon create.

So what is your hobby? Figure out what you want to do for profit. Try to incorporate this idea into all of the ideas you have already sketched out for your business model. Start with a small aspect of your hobby, and if your business is successful, remember you can always add on to your business and keep it growing through incorporating more of your hobby ideas. Again, you should try to get yourself to a quiet location to focus on your overall business plan. You will learn how to build a sustainable business that will potentially support your hobby as a profitable business.

Research and look at similar businesses to get ideas. Many find the internet to be extremely helpful in looking at other businesses and most find that they can communicate with people faster with the use of this incredible invention. You should reflect on the competition and compile it in your overall business plan figuring out different aspects of how you will market your product and how it will compare with the competition in the industry. Once you have figured out the type of business you are going to have, (for example, refinishing furniture), you need to start researching the competition to get a deeper grasp on your business model, but also to see what others are doing. You may need to visit businesses to get an idea of how they conduct their company. If you think this is something you may want to do, find a business where you like what they do and it may closely resemble what you’d like to do in your business. Researching your competition is a bold yet important step you need to take before turning a hobby into a profit.

You can copy or create an identical business to improve the sales for the organization. With the proper analysis of your past jobs, career or careful analysis of the company you used to work for, you can design an ideal business that will sustain the hobby product of your choosing.

Finalize your business plan. What needs to happen next legally, educationally, and financially? Once you have done the research for what your competition looks like in the industry, chances are you have stumbled upon the different licenses you will need to sustain your business or the education you will need to do your business correctly. If you have not stumbled across any of these issues while doing your research for figuring out what is in the industry, you need to make sure you understand the legal requirements for running your hobby turned business.

To educate yourself in sales is very important. If you decide this is not a job for you, following a salesman on their sales calls is another ideal way to learn sales. Ask them if you can accompany them on one of their sales calls. Learning sales should be a top priority for you as you get ready to turn your hobby into a profitable business. Of course, some times products are so great they will sell themselves but not to every customer that looks at the given product. Another aspect of turning a hobby into a profitable business is learning how to sell a product, any product, to another individual. Ask them if you can accompany them on one of their sales calls.

Create and design a business model. What works for you? By adding different aspects of your hobby into your business, you will pull revenue from different avenues and that will help you expand your business at a faster rate.
